Review: Life Is Difficult

La Vita E’ Triste, Ma Pure Bella: Life Is Difficult, But Also Beautiful by Mary R Pagano

I give this book a 4.

LikeIt

Here I thought my family was crazy! Just kidding, but not really. 😉

This memoir is a short read for those who read memoirs all the time. It took me a while to read it, only because I read a bunch of other stuff at the same time. For me, reading intense drama based on reality requires the break of escapism through fiction from time to time. While this story does have light moments, most of it is drama…family drama.

Every family is different, it’s true, but I think we are all more alike than we’d sometimes like to admit. There were things that happened in this story that would never have gone down in my family without someone calling the cops and actually following through on the charges, but not everyone thinks that way. There are things you’ll put up with from family that a stranger couldn’t even contemplate trying to do.

I liked this story because it made me appreciate my family and my life, for all the struggles we do and don’t have that bring us closer together. This is a short and simple read filled with drama and emotion.

I recommend this book to fans of memoirs.

“It’s actually a funny story,” she said as Rebecca helped her sit up. “When Rebecca was born, Lucy fell in love with her. She treated her like a doll and spoiled her rotten. Any chance she could get, she’d sneak up to Rebecca’s ear and repeat Aunty Lucy over and over,” said Ms. Rapture with a tearful smile on her face. “It drove George Tinsdale mad, which only made the whole thing funnier. It became a competition between the two of them to see which name Rebecca would call out first.

In spite of their best efforts, Rebecca’s first words were mama and booboo,” said Ms. Rapture looking over her at daughter. “Booboo was her favorite toy at the time, but the completion wasn’t over between George and Lucy.

“Oh please stay,” she said wiping tears from her face. “I know Teddy and Rebecca would love to have you here. They’re both so fund of you.” Virgil looked up momentarily, he wondered what Lisa meant by that last comment. He’d never seen or heard of this guy before. Why was he there; this should be a time for family, he thought. Little by little over the next couple of hours more family and close friends showed up to give their support. The crowd had to be moved to a waiting room down the hall. Somehow, Lisa became the designated message taker; her phone was flooded with calls from people wanting to know updates. Eventually, even Mr. Thornton showed up. He had his nurse get him a taxi. He came in and sat next to Lisa as she took her calls. He held her purse and her coffee and even her hand when she needed it.
