Review: Brave New World

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

I give this book a strong 3.

Okay

This is a compelling story that seems to have not only to be written as a warning for the future, but also to just make you a little angry at human intellect. Set in a future of “perfection”, Bernard doesn’t feel as happy he’s told he should. He decides to visit a “savage” reservation to gain perspective only to find that he isn’t the “rebellious lone wolf” he thinks he is. In the end, Bernard is the product of the world he lives in, but he still manages to cause a ruckus in the lives of others before realizing this.

This book shows what a wonderfully peaceful existence life could be through control, conformity, segregation, a lax moral code, and drug-induced feelings of happiness. I found this book to be very sad, but shockingly real. This is the story of what could happen to the world, but I hope it doesn’t.  Not that teens would be interested in this book, but I’d recommend it to them (with their parent’s permission). This is a book that plucks a lot of nerves and may not be for everyone, but is definitely worth reading. I see this book going over well with male readers.

It’s Like the Full Moon chapter 2.2 (wip)

Lisa stepped into her room and threw her overnight bag onto the floor. She dropped to her knees and began to toss out the contents of the bag with one hand as she undressed herself with the other. After skimming down to nothing but her panties and tossing her bra across the room, Lisa finally found the treasure she was so desperately searching for. It was a small plastic case with a simple snap lock. She opened it and pulled out a sparkly sleep mask labeled “little angel” in pink letters and a pair of purple earplugs. She pressed the plugs into her ears and crawled across the floor, and then up the end of the bed until she reached the pillowcase. She threw back the covers and tossed the extra decorative pillows on the floor before cuddled up under the cool soft sheets, pulling down her sleep mask just before losing consciousness.

TiTi Lucy replied. “I tell you it was the grace of God,” she said in an almost whisper. “We all know that I’m not the best driver, but that guy was totally drunk when he hit me. It was a miracle I wasn’t hurt. I ended up getting a nice settlement and a new car. I even took some driving lessons so I wouldn’t wreck Shelli the first week I had her… That’s my car’s name. It’s she pretty?” asked TiTi. They all stared at her new custom luxury SVU with all its sparkle and shook their heads as they smiled.
