Tea and Conversation 14: Fathers

teaNtalk

Today I’m sharing a picture of a Mr. Tea mug I posted on my tea pin board, just because it made me laugh.

Today in my meditation I’m thinking about Full Moon, and I’m writing about: Why fathers?

Are you familiar with the term, “she has daddy issues”? If you are, you know that this is not a good thing, but it’s also a bit exaggerated. Plenty of people in this day and age have issues with their fathers without it leading them into a- let’s say, a life with very few inhibitions.

I’ll be the first to admit that I too have issues when it comes to fathers. I was blessed to have a wonderful father growing up, and to this day, I’m still daddy’s little girl, but unfortunately he’s not my birth father. If you’d learned anything about me and my writing to this point, you probably know that my father issues and that of others have found a place in my writing. When it comes to tales of fathers, I think I get into a bit later on in my ECS, but for now, It’s Like the Full Moon, holds the monopoly.

In this story, I paint a picture of two very different fathers. One father is a great provider but not really much of anything else, and another father, though non-traditional, is a wonderful support and friend. I think what’s most important about these fathers that I depict is how their lives and behaviors help shape who their children have become. One son strives to make his father proud knowing it will never be enough, while another has based his entire ideal of love on the relationship his father had with his mother. It really makes you stop and question your own actions and views when you consider that what one person does can shape the life of someone else.

Tea and Conversation 13: Journals

Today in my meditation I’m thinking about the Eternal Curse Series, and I’m writing about: Why journals?

The idea and the process of writing a journal quickly becomes an important theme in my Eternal Curse Series, but it’s a bit ironic because in my whole life, I’ve never consistently kept a journal or diary of my own. After reading the first book in this series (the second is still pending release) readers are able to figure out that at some point, someone reads of Giovanni’s life story through the journals he’s left behind. This becomes very important in the second book and will then be elaborated on in the third. Originally I used the idea of journaling as an easy way to explain where all this information came from, but that idea soon evolved into something else.

The idea of keeping a journal, of being able to tell a story from your own point of view, has always interested me, but I’ve never wanted to tell my own story. It’s not very interesting. I guess that’s why the only journal I’ve ever been able to keep is a writing journal, filled with ideas, notes, and short stories.

If I think of myself as a character in a story, maybe I could write my own story, but again, I’m just not that interesting. In any case, I do think that keeping a journal is important. Even my writing journal can surely tell you a lot about me. From reading it, I imagine that people could see just how disturbed I am about so many things in this world. People could get a glimpse of my odd sense of humor and see just how much rage I have inside me all the time. People would also be able to see the compassion within me and see that I cling to a belief system that they may not clearly understand, but will realize that it’s a part of who I am.

I think a good journal can tell you more about a person than their own DNA, and I try to capture that in my writing.

Tea and Conversation 12: Age

Today in my meditation I’m thinking about Eternal Curse and Full Moon, and I’m writing about: Why age?

It seems to have become a theme in my writing to feature important older characters. It was a few years ago that I truly grasped the concept of ageism and realized that I too had been practicing it. I’ve made efforts since them to not judge people by their age and set limitations upon them. The fact that older characters keep showing up in my stories and having a major impact is a byproduct of this. I never set out to use my writing as a platform, but when I look back at what I’ve written, many messages begin to pop out at me.

I like the idea that as we get older, we actually get better, but I do acknowledge that aging is a challenge. I don’t make it a point to have my older characters seem larger than life, but I do show that you can live a life worth living after a certain age, through my characters. In essence, I write these characters because I hope to someday be just like them. I don’t want to be an old lady siting in a rocking chair (even though rocking chairs rock) barely able to hold onto my knitting needles watching the world spin around me. I want to truly live every moment, right up to the end.

For those who are familiar with my Eternal Curse Series, Abraham is just the first of my senior characters to make an impact on this overall story. I hope to be able to share my, It’s Like the Full Moon, story with the world soon and give people a chance to fall in love with the many senior characters that make an impact in that story.

Also, today I’m visiting with author Shah Wharton. Go check out our special interview.
