Blog swapping by Paula Hrbacek

A cheap and effective promotional opportunity

Self-published authors need to be on the lookout for inexpensive opportunities to promote their books.  One opportunity is to swap blog posts with another blogger who has a site about books or book reviews. Swapping posts means that both authors get a chance to promote their books on another site.  I post about your book, and you post about mine.

To participate in this opportunity, it is important for the author to have a story that is already written and ready to go.  The story should read like a feature or author interview, not an ad.  That means that all opinions should be put in direct quotes and attributed to someone.  Instead of saying “this book will change your life” like an ad would say, a feature story would attribute it as someone’s opinion–“This book changed my life,” said Joe Smith.

The story should contain all the information the reader needs to know before making a purchase; what the book is about, the author’s motivation or reason for writing it, the author’s qualifications or past publications, the average star rating on Amazon or Good Reads, quotes from reviews, and the purchase info of price, binding, ISBN number and where to buy it.  The story can also include the author’s social media sites such as a web site, Facebook page or Twitter address.  If the story is ready to go, most bloggers will edit it to suite their style, and appreciate the ease of posting the article.

The author then finds bloggers that are willing to swap stories.  One place is on Linked In, in the Book Promotion group.  Triberr, a service for bloggers who want to expand their reach on Twitter, also has a discussion group for bloggers who are seeking guest posts.

It’s a simple “you rub my back, and I’ll rub yours” trade.  It’s best to find bloggers in the same subject or genre as your book, because that is where your customers are.  An author who blogs about science fiction is not the best place to promote a romance title, but a blog about relationships and dating would have readers who are interested in falling in love…

WIP Update 02

WIPUThinking too much can hurt your head. I don’t care what people say; it applies to everyone not just the dimwitted. I’ve been working so hard just to produce a few words and this weekly post is driving me crazy already, but…I’ve made some progress this week, even if it’s very small.

I’m still working out the details of the love triangle in It’s Like the Full Moon, but at least I was able to put down a thousand more words in the process.

I’ve added and removed some content from my Eternal Curse sequel, but I’m not altering the story. I’m just trying to clean up some of the redundancy and apply a few more details where needed.

As for the outline of my adventure story, that’s still coming along. At least I’ve started to toy with a few titles. Here’s what I have so far:

Solomon’s Sword

The Redeeming Blade

The Land of Curses and Covenants

WIP Update 01

WIPUHere’s my official first WIP update. I figured a weekly article like this will help to keep me accountable for my writing.

First, I am receiving a very positive response from my betas about the sequel to Eternal Curse. Even though I’m still waiting for a response from one more, everyone has said that they like it better than the other. So since I’m still waiting to send it off to my editor I’m starting to think of marketing strategies for it.

Also, I’m trying to get together with my artist to work on a new set of select images. What’s cool about the ebook versions of these books is that the images are optional. They are a part of the story via links so the reader has the option as to whether they want to see them or not.

Second, my little romance, “It’s Like the Full Moon” is coming along. I think this has been the hardest thing for me to write lately. Romance and contemporary fiction don’t come as natural to me as fantasy, but I really do love this story and feel I just have to tell it.

Since the last time I mentioned it, I finally decided to make the notions of a possible love triangle become a reality. Rebecca is torn, at the moment, between bliss and guilt as two wonderful men now openly woo and compete to be the last man standing. Rebecca has done all she can to avoid this situation, not wanting to be the kind of woman to date multiple men, but these guys just won’t leave her alone and are eager to compete for her affection.

Lastly, I have even gone back and looked at my notes for the adventure story I started so long ago. It’s not even a WIP yet; just lots of notes, but the notes are getting good. Right now I’m trying to decide just how far into the world of fantasy and adventure I’m willing to take this. So far I have a special sword, twin sons, lots of death, and the onslaught of war. There are no elves, dragons, or wizards in the story now, but there is a magical flare to it…a sense of the unknown or unexplained. I still have much more to think about. Maybe next time, I’ll have details from a completed outline to share.
