Review: Sacrifice

Sacrifice (Gryphon #3) by Stacey Rourke

I give this book a 4.

LikeIt

Okay, so the Conduit of the Gryphon has always been terrified of garden gnomes and now she has a reason for it, but I’m jumping ahead of myself.

Let me go ahead and tell you why I didn’t give this great story a five and then move on. Celeste is great, she really is, but her dim-wittedness is starting to drive me crazy…that’s it. I wish the Gryphon would make her smarter.

There is so much I want to say, but I usually make a point not to give away spoilers, so bear with me. I’m just going to list a few things I wish I could elaborate more on.

1. Love continues to be in the air for the Garret family, but not for too long.

2. The title is soooo fitting, it’s almost sad just how much so.

3. Mom finally shows up for a while.

4. There is another really cool conduit to meet, thus my specification in the first sentence. Go back and take a look and see my subtlety.

5. The mystery, or lack thereof, concerning Alex keeps developing…Again, here’s why I wish Celeste was smarter.

6. Titans in this mythology are very different from others I’ve read, but I’m liking them for what they are.

7. There’s something about blondes in this series.

And lastly, I’m ready for this war to finally start.

On a personal note, I’m sad that the book covers are changing with the release of the fourth book. I liked the old covers.

Now back to those gnomes…no that would give too much away.

Aside from this being really cool concept art, this is such a great read and watch. I fell in love with this movie when I was a kid and can’t stop myself from quoting it. I’m no sap, and while there are about ten exceptions to this rule, I’m not a chik-lit or chick-flick kind of girl. So it’s a good thing that isn’t what this story is. It is, however, a love conquers all tale that mingles fantasy, romance, action, adventure, comedy and drama, to keep you wanting more.

I aspire someday to be able to tell my stories and mix in a mint of humor. I adore comedy, but I can’t write it. I don’t think there is anything in the Eternal Curse Series worth laughing about, but don’t let me give you the impression that the book is that dark and hard; it’s not. There are sweet moments in Eternal Curse that beckon to the triumph of Buttercup finding Wesley after he’s defeated Humperdinck; there just isn’t any witty statements about the true condition of Wesley’s body as he falls in her arms, unable to stand on his own.

The Muppets are great! They are so weird, and silly, and cute. They are a ragtag group of friends who’ve been all over the world and back, and even when they split, it’s not long before they all come back together again. Fantasy gets kooky in the world of Jim Henson’s Muppets. There are no boundaries and everything that would normally be weird, is perfectly normal and acceptable. Talking food, animals with animals as pets, interspecies dating…when you write it out like this it actually sounds a little twisted and sick, but it’s the Muppets and they can get away with it.

The Muppets use all their special qualities and super oddness to entertain and even teach many subtle life lessons.  In the world of the Muppets: bullying is unacceptable, discrimination is intolerable, and hate acts and hate speech are unthinkable. In a world where so many people are alike, but different from so many others, it takes a group like the Muppets to show us how we can all get along. A pig, a frog, a bear, an alien, and so much more have figured out what the white man, the black man, the brown man, and so on are still working to understand.

The Muppets make me laugh, but more importantly, they make me think of unity. Unity, or the lack of, is a major theme developing in the world of the Eternal Curse. It’s something so new to the series; even I can’t wait to see where I go with it.
