Tea and Conversation 15: Prayer

Today I’m sharing a picture of “Morning Coffee” art print by mindymcpeak I posted on my tea pin board.

Today in my meditation I’m thinking about Eternal Curse and I’m writing about: Why prayer?

In case you didn’t know, my ECS is about the intermingling of humans with angels and demons. Maybe I’m just not cool enough for the “in” crowd, but it irritates me when people complain about the one prayer that appears in my story. All religions aside, unless I’m missing something, how else would someone who believes in a god communicate with it, if not through prayer?

Yes, this is a highly spiritual story and most of the ideas are based on Christian theology, but I’m not writing a parable. This isn’t a bible story and no one is being converted. Why is this so difficult for people to grasp?

Let’s take into consideration characters like Marvel’s Nightcrawler. This character is a Roman Catholic and isn’t quiet about it, yet he still has a huge following. Then there are other character that are associated with Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and other gods, to which prayer is needed in order to bring forth their powers. Oh and what about that show, Supernatural? Those Winchester boys aren’t exactly saints, but every time they get into a bind, they pray to Castiel and he comes running to their aid.

Maybe it’s not prayer that people have a problem with; perhaps it’s the idea of being associated with a particular religion. In any case, the prayer fits into this story; it belongs there and I’m holding firm to my decision to include it. Also, I won’t back down from including others down the road if they too fit into the story.

Count Your Blessings 16: Books

Books

I feel almost silly explaining why books ae a blessing, but they are. I won’t go into the debate about print versus digital, even though I think there will always be a need for print books no matter how advanced and convenient society becomes. However, I will admit that I do adore my Kindle.

I’ve written before about the great blessing that the written language is and the blessings of books stem from that and branches out. Books are more than just words on paper bound between two covers. Books are an experience. You get to look at them, hold, read, inspect them, interpret them, question them, take care of them or demolish them with love and frequent use.

When I think about times in history when books were burned it makes me weary for the future. It seems that history always repeats itself in some capacity. I won’t lie and pretend that I’d defend the content of every book ever printed, but I wouldn’t help to destroy any, even the ones I don’t like. I’m blessed to live a world where there are more books than any one person could ever read, and blessed that I have an opportunity to try to read as many of them as I can.

Count Your Blessings 15: Transportation

Transportation

I had to walk home one day from a location I visit quite frequently. In a car it takes no more than ten minutes to get there from my house, but walking that distance is something else altogether. There is no direct path and unless you’ve been training for a marathon, odds are, the average person isn’t in the right physical or mental shape to make that kind of trek.

I think all too often people take modes of transportation and roadways for granted. People don’t take good care of their vehicles, they don’t take good care of the roads, and they don’t take good care of themselves behind the wheel, still refusing to put down their mobile phones and just drive.

There are so many reasons I’m blessed to live in a world of modern transportation, but one vain reason is that I like to travel. One day, I’ll let modern transportation take me around the world, but for now, I’m glad to not have to walk to the grocery store unless I just need a good sweat to keep me in shape.
