Worth a Watch

David Bowie, Jennifer Connely, and Muppets- what’s not to love!

Here’s another example of something from my childhood bringing out my creativity, but this one has a little twist. I have always adored this movie, but when I was younger it scared me. I watched it over and over and I always jumped at the right moments, and shivered, and cried, at all the same scenes. This was the first time I really understood that good stories with a positive message could also be a little dark. Not everything has to be sunshine and roses for the good guys and black crows and mud for the bad guys.

The idea of the labyrinth itself is powerfully imaginative. Stories of mazes and labyrinths go back to ancient times, and I’m a believer in looking to the past for inspiration. I’ve only written one short story to date using this staple of myth and fantasy, but it won’t be my last.

I have a thing for green characters. Besides the fact that these characters are often misunderstood and provide some level of the “underdog” idea, which I have a soft spot for, these character are usually socially relevant. There’s always some reason that these characters are made green and that reason usually comes with a social issue attached. For Hulk, that could be a number of things: misuse of power, dangers of nuclear power and or radiation, playing god to create something better/super, and so on.

I like Hulk because he’s angry all the time, but time and again he proves that if people simply leave him alone, he won’t hurt anyone. As part of the Avengers, Hulk proves that he can have friends and work well with others, but that doesn’t mean he’s all of a sudden the life of the party. As an introvert, Hulk is a bit of super poster child. I often think of him when I write a character like Giovanni or some other social outcast.

Don’t get me wrong, vinyl has many wonderful uses. It makes great tarps, tents, umbrellas, siding, etc…but when I say I love vinyl, I’m talking records. There’s something about this technical recording media that fascinates me. I like the look, the mechanism, the sound, the whole experience of picking out a record, wiping it down before putting it on the turntable, and then dropping the needle.

I use my record collection for inspiration. Sometimes when I need to clear my mind, I set up my easel, put on a record, and paint. Then there are times when I play records to get in a specific mood for writing. I can’t explain it, but vinyl records make me want to create.
