Strange and Not-so-Strange Brews from Science Fiction Worlds by Tyrean Martinson

I am currently enthralled in the action that has been my experience of reading the Nexus. I loved the first book and am loving this one, but more on that after these insightful and entertaining thoughts, from Nexus author, Tyrean Martinson, pertaining to “space brews.”

~

If you enjoy science fiction, you might have noticed a tendency for writers to give a unique twist to foods and beverages. Doing this can provide context for character development, a way to highlight social issues, plot twist moments, and detailed world-building. In this post, I want to give a quick summary of notable science fiction drinks from notable science fiction universes. I find it fascinating the authors and creators of these worlds took the time to create detailed and fun beverages for their characters to enjoy. I have posted a bit previously about this for my Nexus Book Party Celebration, so I will mention some of those posts here.

From the multi-verse of stories:

Klah is a coffee-like beverage from Anne McCaffrey’s Pern Universe, most notably mentioned in The Harper Hall Series. I did a short post about this comforting beverage at Lynda Young’s blog.
The Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster from Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is a mind-bending drink I posted about at Patricia Josephine’s Blog.
From the Dune Series by Frank Herbert: Spice beer is an alcoholic beverage made with the spice melange. Spice melange gives long life, vitality, and heightened awareness and even prescience in some. One of the reasons I think the whole “spice” concept works in the Dune series is that it takes a familiar word and gives it new and interesting definitions.
From Firefly, Mudder’s Milk is “all the protein, vitamins and carbs of your grandma’s best turkey dinner, plus 15 percent alcohol.” This notable drink from Firefly, the way it was mentioned, and especially in the Jayneston episode, I thought was both funny and clever.

From the Babylon Five Universe:
Bor’Kaan is a potent Drazi alcoholic drink beverage. Human can only safely drink Bor’Kann after first taking an alcohol blocker.
Brivari is a Centauri alcoholic drink and used for some celebratory occasions.
Orcha Juice is a Markab drink blended from a mix of fruit juices, mostly venda juice and something similar to Earth ginger ale. It was a favourite of Dr. Franklin.
Not-so-strange: Shirley Temple is a non-alcoholic Earth cocktail enjoyed by Vir.
If you aren’t familiar with the Babylon Five Universe, I recommend finding it on Netflix or at your local library. A five-year series planned and plotted out before it’s beginning, this series may start out feeling a bit clunky on the sound stage, but by the middle of the first season, it’s hard not to be hooked on the intrigue and drama of this series about a unique space station with truly creative aliens and humans interacting with one another in the hopes of either peace or profit.

Notable drinks from the Star Wars Universe:
Blue Milk has non-alcoholic and alcoholic varieties. It is Bantha milk in its original form, but it can be created into Blue Milk Coolers, the alcoholic version. There are fan pages dedicated to this drink.
Thala-Siren Milk aka the Green Milk Luke guzzles in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Many other drinks that Star Wars fandoms have multi-pages set aside for them. The Star Wars universe takes its authenticity in world-building seriously at a highly detailed level.

Notable drinks from the Star Trek Universe:
Romulan Ale is a famous drink with political ramifications, which I explain in a post at Alex J. Cavanaugh’s blog.
Kanar is the Cardassian liquor of choice.
Raktajino is played off as simple “Klingon coffee,” but it may have a kick.
Aldeberan Whiskey is a drink Data poured for Scotty when he found himself alive one generation later in the fan favorite episode “Relics.”
Tea, Earl Gray, Hot – Captain Picard’s favorite beverage. Sure it isn’t really a strange brew, but I think it’s worth mentioning as a show favorite.
Like Star Wars, Star Trek has many dedicated fan pages to favorite foods and beverages.

In homage to all of these greatly detailed and fun science fiction universes, I created my own coffee and tea like beverage called awak for The Rayatana Series. I think it’s fun to include these kinds of details for readers who enjoy getting a taste of fictional worlds.

Amaya is supposed to bring peace to the galaxy. Which is tough when she’s being held for crimes against the Neutral Zone. Her imprisonment is on her own ship with her own crew. But close quarters create tension.

Honestly, her role as Rayatana is a mess.

She may never get to use her powers for anything good. Not if her teacher continues to keep secrets, and not if her powers keep harming others. Putting her mother in a coma should put her in prison, but she has a mission. She wants to bring peace to her people. She needs to become the Rayatana.

Thistle (aka Bad Fairy) Chats with Dusty:

Thistle and Dusty used to be fairy enemies, each trying to
pay the other back for something they did to each other. But then a twisty
devastated their home of Pine Cone Grove and all that changed. They helped out
their fellow fairies side by side and are now, much to the astonishment of the
members of Thistle’s Flutter Club, friends.

Thistle: I had fun at the Spring
Festival.

Dusty: So did I! You looked very
pretty.

Thistle: *blushes* Thank you.

Dusty: What was your favorite part
of the festival?

Thistle: Tricking Moss and Lacey.

Dusty: *snickers* Once a bad fairy,
always a bad fairy.

Thistle: *crosses her arms* Hey, I’m
not a bad fairy!

Dusty: I know. I was just teasing
you.

Thistle: Well, it’s not funny, not
since someone is spreading rumors about me doing something really bad
that I didn’t do.

Dusty: I’m sorry. And I promise that
we’ll find the fairy who is spreading those rumors about you.

Thistle: Thanks. *sighs* So, what was
your favorite part of the Spring Festival?

Dusty: Hanging out with you and
looking at all the booths.

Thistle: I wish we could go back to
that day, before the rumors and before my dad went missing.

Dusty: That reminds me, I need to
check in with Sheriff Webbing to see if there’s any news on your dad. I’ll be
back soon!

*Dusty zips off*

Thistle: *shouts* OKUM-SOKUM!

EXCERPT:

“Hi, Thistle!”

The voice startles me, and I turn to see Dusty Withers.
Boogles! Dusty and I were once rivals. He and his sidekick Moss Kelp always
caused trouble and made me get blamed for it, earning me the nickname Bad
Fairy. After a twisty hit, destroying much of our grove, Dusty, Moss, and the
Flutters worked together to rebuild homes. Dusty and Moss proved to us they
changed. Since then, Dusty and I have become friends.

Ssh! Don’t tell anyone. That’ll be our secret for now.

I smooth down my skirt. I’m wearing a strawberry-colored
top and a green web skirt, making me look as though I’m a real strawberry, only
upside down. I hope he doesn’t notice. “Oh, hi,” is all I manage to say.

Dusty steps closer. “Do you want to share lunch with me? I
have a coverlet we can use, and food, of course.” He holds up a basket and
looks at me with hope bright in his brown eyes. I can’t help but notice how
cute he looks wearing a vine crown over his curly brown hair. He’s wearing a
clean shirt and knickers with brown leggings. Before, he used to wear ratty
shirts and dirty shorts from playing rough and getting into mischief.

Secretly, I want to go with him, but I can’t. Only Lacey
knows Dusty and I are hanging out.

“I…uh…” Fuddlebug! I can’t talk.

I try again. “I’m sorry, but I promised to eat with my mom
and dad.” My wings droop. “Then I have a Flutter Club meeting.”

Dusty puts on a grin, and says, “Moss and I could join you at
the meeting.”

“Sorry, but it’s a Flutter girls thing. I know you and Moss
are Flutter Helpers, but everything is good. If we need you two, we’ll call you
to a meeting.” I try to calm the twitching in my wings.

“Okay.” He smiles and gives me a wink before walking away.

He winked at me! Flea bumpies form on my skin.

Guest Post: A Fighting Chance by Chrys Fey #romance #suspense

I’m so excited to feature the next story in the Disaster Crime Series. I love this series and jumped at a chance to ask the author a question about the supporting characters who are being given a chance to shine.

Toi Asked: Will Amanda and Thorn have other stories?

Chrys Fey’s Answer: Thorn and Amanda will have one more story after A Fighting Chance. As a matter of fact, it is available now, and it’s mentioned later in this post!

I wrote The Disaster Curse to answer a few lingering questions readers may have after reading A Fighting Chance, and to tie the Disaster Crimes series together with a neat, shiny, perfect little bow. Plus, there was one disaster that I hadn’t written about yet. *wink*

But other than that short story to follow A Fighting Chance, there won’t be any other stories for Amanda and Thorn, not even one that doesn’t feature a disaster. Once you read A Fighting Chance and The Disaster Curse, you’ll be able to envision their happily-ever-after beyond those endings. Whatever you see for them is valid and very possible. Just as long as there’s no more disasters in their future. I’ve decreed it that they (and Beth and Donovan) will be disaster free for the rest of their lives. (haha) 😊

Pages: 154

Genre: Romantic-Suspense

Heat Rating: Hot

BLURB:

*A FIGHTING CHANCE is Book 6 in the Disaster Crimes series, but it’s a spin-off featuring a new couple, so it can be read as a standalone.*

Thorn has loved Amanda from afar, giving her whatever she needs as a survivor of abuse—space, protection, and stability. He yearns to give her more, though, to share his feelings, kiss her, love her, but he’s worried the truth will frighten her away.

And Amanda is afraid. She’s scared of her attraction for Thorn. Most of all, she’s terrified of her ex-boyfriend, who is lurking nearby where no one can find him. When she grows closer to Thorn, Damon retaliates, jeopardizing their happy ending.

Up against an abusive ex and Mother Nature, do Thorn and Amanda have a fighting chance?

EXCERPT:

Amanda looked up from the current list of up-to-date payments for classes. A movement outside the glass storefront caught her eye. She tilted her head to see a man coming up the sidewalk from the side where the picnic bench sat. Through the vertical blinds, she glimpsed a square face—a short, rugged beard and long, dark hair pulled into a man bun. Her breath fled from her lungs. Her body went from icy cold to flaming hot in the span of a millisecond. She dropped to the floor and slid under the counter, beneath the ledge where they put their purses and cell phones.

“What—” Beth peeked at the windows. Then she snapped her fingers at April and pointed at the stools.

April jumped into action. She pushed the stools in so they blocked Amanda. The bell attached to the door jingled as April removed the jacket she wore and draped it across the stools, creating a curtain to shield Amanda.

From a crack, Amanda watched Beth move to stand in front of the twins, who were in their walkers playing peacefully. “I’m sorry, but we’re going to be closing.”

“I don’t give a shit. I’m here for Amanda.”

The sound of Damon’s voice had her heart beating even harder. That voice had haunted her nightmares, had come back to life in her memories.

Beth cocked her head to the side. “Who? There’s no one by that name here.”

“Don’t bullshit me. I know she works here.”

His voice was closer now.
