A little while ago, Michael D’Agostino, of A Life Examined, brought up the idea of a new blog hop called Question of the Month. He thinks blog readers would like to know a little more about us, the bloggers. So we’re all gathering to show you guys who we are by taking part in the Question of the Month blog hop. On the first Monday of each month, we answer the question that gets posted here.
This month’s question is: “Have you ever met an idol/influencer/someone you really admire? How did it go?”
Straight out the gate, I can answer this “no”, but since I’m late posting, I will elaborate.
I’ve met many famous, semi-famous, and influential people in my life, but no major A-list celebrities except for one. The one A-lister I met is actually a pretty big influencer too, but it’s not someone that I personally admired when I met them and even now, while I respect this person for their influence, I don’t think they are someone I would squeal about if I had the chance to meet them again.
Aside from meeting a handful of reality stars, comedians (and not just because I saw them perform), and a hand full of either Miss Texases or Miss Virginias, I met Oprah when I was in the 3rd grade. I mean, I was just a kid; I knew she was an important person and I enjoyed the hype of other people being happy for me that I was going to meet her, but it didn’t really hit me, what an opportunity that was. If I were to meet her now, I have a whole list of questions I would ask, but still… She’s not someone I’m just waiting to meet.
To be honest, I’m not sure who I’d be really excited to meet. It would probably have to be an actor or musician, or perhaps a writer… Yeah, I’d probably really enjoy meeting some of the writers I admire.

I met George R.R. Martin years before the Game of Thrones TV show came out. I lost my voice and couldn’t speak!

I’ve never met any kind of celebrity. Not a comedian, author, reality star. Nothing.
I don’t think you’re missing anything. Besides, to someone else, you’re probably the superstar.
What led to you meeting Oprah when you were a child?
She was going on tour and had made plans to visit with a handful of students from local schools in each of the cities along the way. I didn’t get to shake her hand or anything because her tour was behind schedule, but she was pretty nice about the whole situation. Me and two other kids got to be in the room with her a few minutes. She said some stuff I don’t remember and then we caught her “show”- it was more of a motivational talk. Not too bad, but still memorable.
Oprah is a pretty big celebrity to meet. I seldom ever saw her show because I was usually working but you addressed a lot of issues.
Yeah, while she wasn’t someone I really wanted to meet at the time, I still appreciate the experience and opportunity. It’s not something everyone can say they’ve done. Plus, like I said, I do respect her level of influence.

If I could meet anyone, I don’t think I could pass up on Paul McCartney. Some time ago, I came to the realization that I probably wouldn’t actually like him very much. But I have so many questions! It would only be worth asking if he would answer truthfully, though. Not sure he would.
I totally get that. I fear that many of the famous people I would like to me might not actually be so great once I meet them. I totally could and wouldn’t mind to sit down for a Q & A with Sir Paul McCartney just because not everyone gets to do that.
I’d probably be equally excited to meet Oprah as I would to meet Miss Texas 😉
You’re probably more likely to spend more time taking with Miss Texas’s hand. She’s not usually overbooked or in a hurry. 😉
I think the concept of “celebrity” is very different when you’re a kid. Thinking back I can recall being around some rather cool celebrities and well known people when I was a kid, but it didn’t mean much to me. Besides I was probably too shy to say anything anyway.

Yeah, when you’re young you just see the world differently. Sometimes you see it better.
I met an author during college once. I’d read her book (of course since it was part of the syllabus). She’d come to the college on tour and even signed my book. Regretfully, I lost the book and can’t remember the title. I wouldn’t say I admired her but I did admire her, like all other authors, for publishing a book.
Yeah. I get that. Sometimes I seek out other authors just for the experience of speaking to someone I know is connected to writing in the same way I am. That’s probably why I used to like interviewing authors.
Oprah would be better than who I have crossed paths with.
Wow, I would have loved to have met Oprah! She’s one of my heroes.
She was a big one to meet indeed. But yeah, when young we have little idea how big many are.
This was an easy one for me too because I really do not admire anyone. In my mind in order to admire someone you have to put them on a pedestal and we are all human. So know I haven’t met anyone that I admire.
